On the Strict Tolerant Conception of Truth

چکیده

We discuss four distinct semantic consequence relations which are based on Strong Kleene theories of truth and which generalize the notion of classical consequence to 3-valued logics. Then we set up a uniform signed tableau calculus (the strict-tolerant calculus) which we show to be sound and complete with respect to each of the four semantic consequence relations. The signs employed by our calculus are As, Ds, At and Dt which indicate a strict assertion, strict denial, tolerant assertion and tolerant denial respectively. Recently, Ripley applied the strict-tolerant account of assertion and denial (originally developed by Cobreros et all. to bear on vagueness) to develop a new approach to truth and alethic paradox, which we call the Strict Tolerant Conception of Truth (STCT). The paper aims to contribute to our understanding of STCT in at least three ways. First, by developing the strict-tolerant calculus. Second, by developing a semantic version of the strict-tolerant calculus (assertoric semantics) which informs us about the (strict-tolerant) assertoric possibilities relative to a fixed ground model. Third, by showing that the strict-tolerant calculus and assertoric semantics jointly suggest that STCT’s claim that “the strict and tolerant can be understood in terms of one another” has to be reconsidered.

This article demonstrates a part of findings of a research that has been developed for designing a public policy making system, based on conception of Alavian truth-oriented justice.  According to the first part of this research, a logical system is developed. The system introduces five logical principles and nineteen theorems. These principles and theorems are inferred from Nahjolballagha and...

Naive Modus Ponens

In his [2011], Lionel Shapiro proposes a very interesting deflationist conception of logical consequence, according to which the logical-consequence predicate applying to sentences serves as a merely expressive device allowing us to talk in a generalising way about typically non-linguistic entailment facts (just as, according to a deflationist conception of truth, the truth predicate applying t...

Tolerant, Classical, Strict

In this paper we investigate a semantics for first-order logic originally proposed by R. van Rooij to account for the idea that vague predicates are tolerant, that is, for the principle that if x is P, then y should be P whenever y is similar enough to x. The semantics, which makes use of indifference relations to model similarity, rests on the interaction of three notions of truth: the classic...

Dual Punitiveness- Tolerant Approaches to Response to Drugs and Psychotropic Crimes: Discourse Analysis of “Metri Shisho Nim” movie

Extended Abstract Introduction: Although there has been a deep consensus among criminal science scholars about the necessity of applying punishment per se in response to the most severe criminal behaviors, human beings still tend to instinctively respond to criminal behavior with repressive measures. While there is no denial of the necessity of applying penalties in the fight against criminal ...

Indeterminate Truth

Can a truth-bearer be true but not determinately so? On the enduringly popular standard supervaluational conception of indeterminacy, under which the principle of bivalence is invalid, the answer is a straightforward No. On such a conception, truth just is determinate truth—truth in all admissible interpretations. For that reason, a more interesting question is: can a truth-bearer be true but n...
